Reginald “Reggie” Hendricks

Reginald “Reggie” Hendricks left this world Nov. 8, 2006. He was born March 31, 1914, in Salem, Penn. He met and then married Laura, the love of his life for more than 50 years.

As a young lad, Reggie’s dream was to travel north to Alaska and, with his wife, Laura, fulfilled his dream of adventure arriving in Anchorage on a wet and soggy July day, 1957.

Reggie worked at Fort Richardson and his wife Laura worked at KENI-TV, now KTUU-TV, in Anchorage. They homesteaded and even fished commercially before moving to Homer in 1981.

In April 1959, they located 160 acres on the Kenai Peninsula near the Kasilof River. The next few years were typically homestead adventures without running water or power. They lived a life similar to the settlers in prior times. After much hard work, the Hendricks proved up on the homestead and received a patent from the federal government. In 1960, they moved to Clam Gulch, where they could have power. Reggie renovated a small cabin and lived on the property for 21 years.

After meeting and making friends with commercial fisherpeople, they loved the whole idea of fishing for a living. This was the beginning of one of their best adventures. After several years, Reggie found set netting too tough and very hard on his war injuries, so he built a drifter, the FV Alaska Lass, and fished for a few more years.

After returning to the Lower 48 so Laura could get her teaching certificate, the Hendricks returned to Alaska. Laura taught at Ninilchik and Seldovia, while Reggie had photographic assignments with Doubleday Multimedia and others. Hence, they moved to Homer to live a civilized life and engaged themselves in community affairs and in the delights of beaches.

Besides his lovely wife, Laura, Reggie leaves a niece and nephew who reside in Florida.

A funeral service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 2 p.m. Monday. Reggie was interned at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery, with Bishop Hillman presiding. A celebration of Reggie’s life at the Cultural Hall followed.
