Even down among the swamp rats, fluffy white snow has fallen majestically, blanketing our quaint little hamlet with its soft calm, blah blah blah. OK, big clumps of pale gray mashed potatoes alleged to be snow, but still. As long as you don’t have to shovel the stuff, it is kinda perty.
Some people have already put up their C———— decorations. Yeah, and they probably wear white after Labor Day, too.
The biggest sign of winter, though, is Friday’s astronomical event. Our neighbors in the Cosmic Hamlet by the Ice Pack wave good-bye to the sun. Some people might say that 24 hours of darkness in Barrow is a blessing, but that is like so harsh, Betsteroids. The B. has been to the Top of the World, and it’s a way cool place, sort of Retro Inupiaq Yankee Whaler Chic.
So it could be worse. The brightest thing in the sky could be that amazing full moon that’s been blessing us this past week. On a clear winter day, at least we can turn our faces to the sun and be warmed, sorta. Light a candle, turn on your flashlights and dress warmly, because it’s time to get out and check out these Best Bets:
BEST BANNED IN WASILLA BET: “Proof” played here at Pier One Theatre, and not even cranky letter writers complained about its use of the “F” word. Not so in the Mat-Su, which got all in a tizzy. Missed the play? Check out the PG-13 rated movie at the Homer Theatre. The 8:45 p.m. show on Friday is a benefit for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill’s’ Circle of Wings drop-in center, yet another one of those hard-working nonprofits running on a shoestring budget.
BEST DON’T SEND MONEY TO NIGERIANS BET: How can small businesses keep from getting ripped off? Find out at noon Tuesday at the Best Western Bidarka Inn when Don Krohn, a security officer for First National Bank, speaks on “Fraud Awareness for Small Business” at the monthly Homer Chamber of Commerce lunch.
BEST BANANA BELT BET: The rest of Alaska seems to be going through what Homer has often endured: warm, sloppy wet winters. What’s happening with climate research? Check out “Climate Change: What Lies Ahead,” a talk by National Park Service educator John Morris at 7 p.m. Friday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center.
BEST TUT TUT BET: Slab on the kohl eyeshadow, get out your asps and put on your best Cleopatra wig, because it’s time for the Egyptian Carnival at 6 p.m. Friday at Nikolaevsk School. That’s the theme for the annual gathering of fun, games, food and did we say fun?
