Hours pass, and you're so engrossed in cranking out deathless prose (like we word drones here at Homer News Central) or some other work, you don't notice, Hey, the sun has risen. Well, get out of your office chairs, Betsteroids. Rise from your cubicle. Stumble out into the light and let the sun shine on your face.
What do you think this is -- Barrow? The sun hasn't set for months. We're still lucky enough to get some healing vitamin D here at latitude 59 degrees and some change. Even if the weather doesn't break, that fresh air will do ya some good. Take a walk on the beach and suck in those positive ions. Get up. Get out. If you're one of those lucky working stiffs hammering nails outdoors, OK, you might have your fill of fresh air. Those of us cooped up inside don't have an excuse.
While you're out and about this week, why not try some of these Best Bets?
BEST MIX IT UP BET: Each month the Homer Chamber of Commerce coerces -- er, invites -- some business to host the monthly chamber mixers. It's a chance to hang with the movers and the shakers in the biz community. This month, the mixer is from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tech Connect, in the Frontier Building at 432 E. Pioneer Ave. The mixer includes video game demonstrations, refreshments and door prizes.
BEST TO YOUR HEALTH BET: Want to learn about all those healthy things you said you'd do? That's right: it's time for the annual Homer Health Fair, sponsored by Kachemak Bay Rotary and South Peninsula Hospital. The fair runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Homer High School. While you're at it, bring dry goods (such as oatmeal or pasta) or canned foods for the Roteract food drive. Roteract, the youth branch of Rotary, sponsors a food drive at the Health Fair.
BEST 'ONCE, AT BAND CAMP' BET: You heard them at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center grand opening. You got their bootleg recording off the Web. (OK, just kidding.) Now's the chance to hear Homer's hottest new band, the Inlet Winds Community Band. Under the direction of Renda Horn, Inlet Winds presents an old-fashioned band concert from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ninilchik High School.
BEST SOCK MONKEY BET: The Betster's favorite stuffed animal was an old sock monkey, bought at a church bazaar a couple of decades ago. Homemade crafts like that can't be found at Wal-Mart, you know. Bazaar season kicks into high gear this weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the hospital. Saturday, it's the big nonprofit bazaar from 10 am. to 3 p.m. at the Homer Middle School. Check out the bazaar schedule in Town Crier for other arts and crafts fairs coming up.
Yeah, you know how it goes here in the dark days of early winter. You get up at the crack of night at, oh, maybe 6 a.m., suck down a cup of Joe and stumble out to your trusty Sube. By the light of Venus, by Jupiter, you drive into town -- assuming Homer hasn't gotten socked in yet again. You drop the kids off at school and then go to work.
