Essay contest

High school studens and teachers are reminded that the Bill of Rights Institute's national "Being An American Essay Contest" deadline is Dec. 1. The contest asks students to answer the question: "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" Teachers must submit essays online at www.beinganamerican.org for a chance to win cash prizes and trips to the naton's capital, awarded to teachers and students. The names of the top three prize winners in nine contest regons will be announced in the spring of 2010. First place winners in each region and their sponsoring teachers each receive $5,000 cash; second place $2,500; third place $1,250. Honorable mention prizes of $250 will be awarded to 7 students and teachers. For information, visit the Web at www.beinganamerican.org.

Scholarships

High school students in grades 9-12, including home school and private school in the Homer area, including across the bay, Anchor Point and at the head of the bay, are invited by General Buckner American Legion Post 16, to compete in the National High School Oratorical Contest. The subject of an 8-10 minute "prepared oration" must be about some phase of the constitution of the United States, emphasizing duties and obligations of a citizen to the U.S. government. Each contestant will be asked to speak 3-5 minutes on one of the assigned topics. Oratorical information data sheets must be returned to the American Legion chairman on or before Dec. 1. The Homer contest will be in January, district level in Kenai in February, state competition in Anchorage in April. For more information, contact the post at 235-8864 or Bill Sheldon at 235-6789.

The Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship is awarded the first week of March. The amount of the scholarship for 2010 will be $3,000. Deadline for applications is Jan. 10. For applicants to be eligible, they must be enrolled in or applying to one of the following in an aviation field or a high school senior applying to an accredited college or university, a licensed flight school or a related certification program.
