Coach Chris Perk said Adam Hediger provided the bright spot for an otherwise flat Mariner squad.
Hediger, wrestling at 171 pounds, beat the Stars' Johnny Howarth with a last-minute 7-6 decision.
The presence of four wrestlers from Voznesenka School, who all competed in exhibition matches, provided some of the more inspiring wrestling of the afternoon.
For the Voznesenka wrestlers -- freshmen Kornily Polushkin and Safron Kalugin, sophomore Trofin Martushev and senior Victor Kuzmin -- it was their first competition outside of the practice room. The Cougars are only permitted to wrestle exhibition matches until Voznesenka wrestling is sanctioned by the Alaska School Activities Association.
The Cougar wrestlers finished without a win at 0-8. But that didn't matter, according to Voznesenka principal Ray Hillman. Hillman said what was important was the opportunity for the kids to see what it was like to wrestle in a real meet atmosphere.
Voznesenka hopes to get the necessary ASAA sanction for its wrestling program to begin competing during the 2003-2004 season.
