This week, Jenna Raymond, a senior and treasurer of the school’s student council, deposited a check for more than $1,000, half the proceeds from the dance, into Wells Fargo’s American Red Cross Gulf Coast account.
Tickets to the dance were $8 each.
“So each person basically donated $4 to the relief fund,” said Raymond, adding that the remainder helped pay for the cost of the dance, with any left over going to future events.
“Collectively, all the student council members decided to split the proceeds, with half going to Hurricane Katrina,” said Anthony Augusto, a senior and student body president. Augusto said Zack Thompson, senior class president, also was instrumental in preparing the donation for deposit. This was not the only donation for hurricane survivors inspired by Homer High students. While they were performing “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” the final number at the school’s fall choir and band concert on Nov. 1, a collection was taken with the Mariner Theatre audience donating $1,100. This also was deposited in the Wells Fargo account. Since the American Red Cross Gulf Coast account was established on Aug. 30, Alaska donors have given more than $340,000, according to Shari Daugherty, a spokesperson for Wells Fargo in Homer.
Of the contributions made and inspired by Homer High School students, Daugherty said, “It’s amazing.”
