Mr. Kolar was born May 11, 1916, in Detroit, Mich. He was a retired lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he served as a B-26 pilot during World War II. In 1947, Art moved with his wife and baby daughter to Anchorage, where the family resided for five years. In 1952, he moved to Kenai where he and Ollie managed the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store. In 1957, the family moved to Homer where they established a permanent residence. They owned and operated Kachemak Food Cache. Mr. Kolar was an active member of the community, serving in the following clubs and associations: Homer Elks Club, Lions Club, Pioneers Club, and Masons, 32nd degree.
Mr. Kolar is lovingly remembered by his family as a kind and generous man. He was the first to offer help or just to sit and listen. Art and Ollie retired in 1975, and spent the following years traveling and visiting family and friends. During the summers, Mr. Kolar could be found on his tractor, happily mowing the fields of his homestead, or playing a round of golf. When asked what was most important to him, he would always reply, “My family.”
Mr. Kolar is survived by his wife, Olive Kolar of Homer; daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Norm Story of Homer; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Don Blackwell of Homer; grandsons Garrett and Christopher of Homer and Clay Christy of Layton, Utah; granddaughter Jodi Anderson of Aiken, S.C; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be sent to the South Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care Unit, 4300 Bartlett Street, Homer, AK 99603.
