‘Red Raven’ opens Friday

Friday: “The Red Raven,” an unbound limited-edition book, goes on display and sale starting Friday at the Homer Council on the Arts. A reception is 5-7 p.m., and at 5:45 p.m. Brian Springer tells the legend of the Red Raven. Kachemak Bay artists Robert Walsh, Kari Multz-Howell, MaryBee Kaufman, Pat Wells, Bill Kitzmiller and Brian Springer have illustrated or done calligraphy for pages of the book.

Writer offers workshop

Friday: Colleen Madonna Flood Williams offers a children’s writers workshop from 6-8 p.m. at 59783 Larksparrow Court, Homer. The fee is $20 a child. Children will write a “My Adventure” book they have illustrated and helped to write. Flood Williams has written several books for Windstorm Creative’s Orchard Academy “My Adventure” series, including, “My Adventure to the Fair,” “My Adventure to the Forest Clubhouse” and “My Adventure to the Harbor.”

Artists hold open studio

Friday: Homer ceramic artists Paul Dungan and Paul Eneboe display their sculpture and pots at Dungan’s new studio. The open studio is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Icy Bay Road. Turn left on Icy Bay near Mile 5.5 East End Road. The studio is the fourth house on the left. Refreshments will be served.

Film producer in Homer

Dec. 14: The producer of “Majimak Babsang (The Last Dining Table),” Minsu Yang, visits for the Homer showing of his film at 8:30 p.m. at the Homer Theatre. Yang also appears at a reception at 7 p.m. that day at the Bunnell Street Gallery. Directed by Gyeong-Tae Roh and in Korean with English subtitles, “Majimak Babsang” is about the contradictions of modern society, the collapse of family values and global pollution. Tickets to the show are $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and children. The reception at Bunnell is free.

Sculptor unveils art project

Dec. 15: Homer sculptor Leo Vait will unveil his monumental sculpture, “Bone Music II,” at 4:30 p.m. at the Atwood Building in Anchorage. A 1-percent for art project, the sculpture was part of the remodeling of the state office building and is in the plaza at Seventh Avenue and E Street. Vait started the sculpture in September 2005 and installed it in October 2006s.

Russian singers present celebration

Dec. 16: The Russian Colony Singers of the Matanuska-Susitna area present “Russian Holiday,” a seasonal celebration at 7 p.m., at Bunnell Street Gallery. The celebration includes Russian and Jewish folk songs, a traditional blessing over bread and a Russian meal catered by Panarelli’s. Seating is family style at tables. Tickets are $40 general admission or $100 for up to four family members and $35 for gallery members or $90 a family at the member rate. Call 235-2662.

Pamyua, Kilcher perform in Kenai

Saturday: Pamyua, the Native American Music Award winning quartet, performs at 7 p.m. at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. Sponsored by the Kenaitze Indian Tribe, proceeds benefit the Kenaitze tribe’s Native Youth Olympics team and its expenses in traveling to Anchorage for the Native Youth Olympics. The team demonstrates Alaska Native athletic events before the concert.

Dec. 16: Homer musician Atz Kilcher plays folk, bluegrass, Western, cowboy and classic country music at 7 p.m. at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. One of Alaska’s foremost singers and songwriters, Kilcher performs songs from his latest albums, “Voices of the Valley” and “Spirit Filled Air.” The Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s Jabila’ina Dance Group performs before the concert. Proceeds benefit the dance group. Tickets are on sale at the Kenaitze Indian Tribe’s office at 150 N. Willow St., Kenai, or the the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center, 11471 Spur Highway, Kenai, or by calling Michael Bernard at (907) 398-1510. Kilcher also performs Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at the Homer Theatre. Tickets are $5 adults, $3 for children age 11 and under.

Students present recital

Dec. 15: Harbor School of Music students present two recitals for violin, piano and guitar at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Mariner Theatre. Admission is free.

State council holds teleconference

Dec. 15: The Alaska State Council on the Arts holds its quarterly teleconference at noon. The agenda includes consideration of quarterly grant requests and the semi-annual Artist in School grant requests. For more information, call (888) 278-7424.
