Family displaced by apartment fire

BY MICHAEL ARMSTRONG

An early Saturday morning apartment fire displaced a mother and her son and caused the evacuation of an apartment building on West Danview Avenue. All occupants escaped injury.

Bay Realty, the manager of the apartment complex, found a new home by Saturday for the family, Naomi Klouda, 48, and her son, said Gina Pelaia, manager for Bay Realty Property Management. Bay Realty also is helping Klouda get furniture and house wares, Pelaia said.

"We're doing what we can to help them," she said.

The fire started in an upstairs bedroom of Klouda's apartment and caused major damage to the three-bedroom unit. Firefighters were paged out at 1:14 a.m. Dec. 5 and the first units responded at 1:26 a.m., said Chris Cushman, an emergency services specialist with the Homer Volunteer Fire Department. Homer Police also responded and assisted with evacuation.

Everyone was outside the building by the time firefighters arrived.

Crews with a fire engine, a fire tanker, three utility trucks and one ambulance responded. Kachemak Emergency Services also provided mutual aid with one fire engine, Cushman said.

Fire and smoke were blowing out the upstairs apartment window when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters knocked down the fire with exterior hoses and an interior attack and had it fully controlled by 3 a.m., when residents were allowed back in the building. Cushman said the attic and walls between units had firebreaks.

"Because the unit was so well constructed, the sheet rock was able to contain the flames to one unit," Pelaia said.

Pelaia called damage to Klouda's apartment a total loss.

The complex has 12 units in two wings. An unoccupied unit next to the apartment had some smoke and water damage, but the rest of the complex was not damaged, Cushman said.

Firefighters could not determine the cause of the fire, said Dan Miotke, an HVFD emergency services specialist.
