Two to (teach) tango

Spice up the dark winter nights with tango dance lessons. Coire Langham and Talieson McEnaney teach tango dancing in a fun, relaxed atmosphere Friday night. The basics of tango is 8-9 p.m. followed by dancing and a demonstration from 9-11:30 p.m. at the Studio, 177 Bunnell Avenue. All ages and abilities welcome, and no partners are necessary. Admission is $8.

Children’s writing workshop offered

Homer author Colleen Madonna Flood Williams holds a second children’s writing workshop from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Kachemak Community Center for children ages 8 to 10. Children will begin to work on a “My Adventure” book with Flood Williams. The fee is $20 per child and each child will take home a “My Adventure” book. Call for art proposals

The Alaska State Council on the Arts announces a call for art for the Sitka High School and Performing ArtsCenter, Sitka. The Sitka School District Public Art Committee seeks proposals for exterior and interior art, with a total budget of $75,000. Artists are invited to submit concept proposals for art work to be commissioned at multiple sites. The postmark deadline is Dec. 29. Dance workshops start the new year

Port Townsend, Wash., dance instructor Walter Dill visits Homer Jan. 2 and 3 with a series of dance workshops. From 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 2 is “Demystify Dance Workshop.” On Jan. 3 from 6-7:15 p.m. is “American Bandstand Swing” and from 7:30-8:45 p.m. is “Salsa Variations.” Sponsored by the Homer Council on the Arts, the price for each evening of dance is $15 adults, $10 youth, $40 a family. Non-members pay $20 adult, $15 youth, $60 a family. Register by Dec. 20 for pre-workshop price; admission is $5 extra at the door. Tickets are available at the Homer Council on the Arts. Art classes offered next two months

Homer artist Lynn Marie Naden offers four art classes or workshops starting in January. On Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30 is “Relief Sculpture.” The fee is $150, and includes clay and firing. On Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2 is “Mould Making,” with a $200 fee. New artists can try out “Beginning Adult Art” in various mediums and techniques from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays on Jan. 24, 31 and Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28. The fee is $200. The weekend of Feb. 4-5 from noon-5 p.m. is “Paper Making,” with a $120 fee. All classes are at Naden’s studio on Bear Creek Drive. Sign up by Dec. 31 by calling Naden at 235-5966.

‘Rock & Ice’ show ends this month

Tom Reed’s show of black-and-white photographs, “Rock & Ice,” ends this month at Mermaid Café. Reed’s photographs were taken in the ice fields above Kachemak Bay State Park and Kenai Fjords National Park. The photographs are for sale, with a 20 percent end-of-show discount.

Nutcracker photos available

Homer photographer Scott Dickerson is offering a selection of Nutcracker Ballet images for viewing or purchase through his Web site at www.scottdickerson.com/nutcracker. Reprints can be ordered through the Web site, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Share the Spirit.
