A funeral mass was held Dec. 14, 2005, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, Homer. Father Richard Tero celebrated the mass. Burial was at Hickerson Memorial Cemetery on Diamond Ridge Road. A reception followed the burial at the Doan residence. Pallbearers were Don Doan, Gary Davis, Pat Luker, Kenny Rogers, Jordan Doan, Jonathan Doan and Robin Barger.
Mrs. Doan was born June 2, 1923, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and was a high school graduate. She moved to Homer in November 2002.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing and caring for stray animals.
“Madeline was a wonderful, loving grandmother. She had a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile that will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was also the matriarch of the family, being a model 50s and 60s housewife. She was a wonderful mother-in-law who was never judgmental to anyone,” her family said.
Mrs. Doan was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Doan, in 1984 and her youngest son, Martin Doan, in 2002.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Elizabeth Doan of Homer; son, Joseph Doan of Florida; niece and husband, Debbie and Pat Luker of Anchorage; grandchildren, Jordan, Jonny and Rachel Doan of Homer, Nichole and Michelle Doan of Eureka, Calif., Jillian and Ashley Doan of Florida, and Travis and Trista Doan of Fairbanks; great-granddaughter, Ryann Zimmer of Fairbanks; her special friend and caregiver, Gary Davis of Homer; and caregivers, Bonnie Nelson, Jeanne Manson and Victoria Parr all of Homer.
The family prefers memorial donations in Madeline’s name be sent to the Homer Animal Friends, P.O. Box 2300, Homer, AK 99603.
Arrangements were made by the Homer Funeral Home.
Homer resident Madeline Elizabeth Doan, 82, died Dec. 8, 2005, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer surrounded by her family and friends.
