Five members of the Anchor Point Volunteer Fire Department's Emergency Medical Service (EMS) crew attended the Alaska State EMS Symposium in Anchorage Nov.13 to 15. EMS Chief Robin Proctor, EMT1 Jolayne Soplanda, Captain Ron Wilhoit, EMT3 Tamera Wilhoit, and EMT2 Sergey Yakunin participated in a variety of activities, including continuing education classes, skills competitions, and the State EMS Awards Banquet.
Yakunin, the first Department member from Nikolaevsk to ever participate in the event, attended basic and advanced life-support classes.
"They were eye-opening, because they give you a different perspective on situations that you run across, make you aware of "red flags" that you may not have considered before, and what you can do about them," said Yakunin.
The competitions also gave the team a chance to practice hands-on scenarios.
The Anchor Point team took the fourth place out of nine in the Skills competition behind Unalaska, Palmer and Nome.
