A memorial service will be held in January at the V.F.W. in Anchor Point. His ashes will be scattered in the mountains near Elko, Nev. where he grew up.
Mr. Sylverston was born Feb. 13, 1925, in San Francisco. He graduated from college with a degree in Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant. He moved to Alaska in 1994 residing in Anchorage, and moved to Anchor Point three years ago.
Mr. Sylverston enjoyed drinking, reading and seeing people smile. He was a member of the Unity Church and also enjoyed playing the harmonica.
"He was just one tired old Marine, who always wondered why he made it through Iwo Jima when so many good men died," his friend wrote.
Mr. Sylverston is survived by his friend and companion Cristinia Crutchfield of Anchor Point.
