Two out of the five wrestlers from Voznesenka came home with medals after the 1A/2A/3A state tournament at Bartlett High School last weekend. But, what is perhaps a bigger achievement, the team placed higher than any other 1A school has placed in the championship's history. With each wrestler defeating at least one opponent, the Voz team managed 53 points and a 13th place overall out of 46 schools represented at the tournament. That's an exceptional achievement for a school with an enrollment of just 32 students. Zenon Martushev placed fourth overall at 160 pounds and Leo Polushkin, who lost just one match, placed third at 285 pounds. Joe Martishev at 135 pounds and Zenovei Martushoff at 145 pounds both placed in the top eight. Julian Polushkin wrestled at 215 pounds and defeated James Sharpe of Klawock, but did not advance further in the tournament.
