online poll question:
Do you approve of the city’s handling of the 2007 Homer budget?
• Yes: 24 percent
• No: 76 percent
Selected comment:
Homer needs more jobs. HELLOOOO! We needed Fred Meyer for everyone in the community. Jobs are badly needed in this town. I would much rather see some competition and will continue to go to Soldotna to shop. ... Homesteaders built this town and would much rather see their kids be able to work and stay here. But as long as our current government is in power we will continue to see our kids move away. It’s time to see some progress in Homer. It’s pathetic. What do we want, a bunch of old people living here that only contribute to the service industry? How does that help the rest of us? Do you think everyone wants to paint pictures and go to the bar? No! That’s not very “sexy” if you ask me. ... Our local leaders would rather annex your property and give nothing in return, instead of letting a store like Fred Meyer come to town that would add jobs and more revenue for our local economy. What drives our local government? Tourism. It won’t last forever. How much does your little tourist shop pay their workers? How long will the job last? Will you ever have benefits? A retirement? No. But the owner will walk away smiling. And that is, in a nutshell, what Homer is.
