M’s beat alumni going away

Maybe they were toying with the old guys in the first period. Or maybe the old guys just ran out of gas down the stretch.

Either way, the Mariner high school hockey team beat the Alumni team 6-3 Tuesday night at the Homer Ice Arena.

“It was a lot of fun,” said alum Justin Adams — now a minor-league hockey player for the Eugene (Ore.) Generals. “It’s great to see how the guys have improved.”

The game didn’t start out as lopsided as the final score would indicate, however, as alum Max Drathman put the old guys up 1-0 in the first period by sending home a rebound less than 30 seconds into the contest.

Six minutes later, Adams knocked home another and the Alumni team went up 2-0.

The second period started with the first penalty of the game when alumn Travis Brown was dinged for holding. Six minutes later, Brown’s old teammate, alum Alex Trieweiler, found his way to the box with a cross checking call.

Alex’s little brother capitalized, as Mariner Adam Trieweiler scored a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1.

That score held up to the final two minutes of the period. For the Mariners it only took those two minutes to give them an insurmountable lead.

Mariner Drake Piper tied the game at the two-minute mark. Aaron Lewis scored two goals in 30 seconds and Josh Pitta scored with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Mariner team a 5-2 lead.

Both teams added goals in the third, one by alum Drathman and one by Mariner David Buckley to make the score 6-3.

During the closing minutes, the Alum team pulled its goalie to get another skater on the ice.

When the puck squeezed out of the zone with time winding down, Adam Trieweiler took a pass and raced to the open net for what looked like an easy goal.

With just one person to beat, Trieweiler made his move. But the defender, Alex Trieweiler stopped him cold to end the game.
