Icy roads and a .08 blood-alcohol level — or any amount of alcohol that impairs drivers — are a bad combination on New Year’s Eve. Partiers who get carried away shouldn’t risk getting behind the wheel. So here’s a little tip from the Betster to help keep you and other motorists safe this New Year’s Eve.
BEST GET YOU AND OTHERS HOME SAFELY BET: For the sixth year, KacheCab offers New Year’s revelers a safe way to get home: free taxi cab rides.
From 7 p.m. Dec. 31 to 7 a.m. Jan. 1, KacheCab drivers offer rides anywhere from Fritz Creek on East End Road to the Sterling Highway and the Old Sterling Highway.
“It’s way to show just a little customer appreciation and to keep everybody alive,” said KacheCab owner Chris Fischer.
Cabs won’t just pick up at bars, but will stop by private parties anywhere in its service area. A van will be running for larger parties. Although the fare is free, Fischer encourages passengers to tip drivers.
“It’s a fun night to drive, but it’s kind of crazy too,” he said.
To get a ride, call KacheCab at 235-1950.
BEST GOING TO EXTREMES BET: Why curse the snow when you can laugh in its face? Extreme tubing is one way to make the most of the thick blanket of fluff we’ve been blessed with this winter. Head up to Ohlson Mountain and give it a try.
BEST I’VE GOT BIRD FEVER BET: The folks at Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center are set to unlock the secrets of the southern Kenai Peninsula’s featured residents:
n 1 p.m. today the center is throwing a holiday party fit for the birds, with how-to tips for attracting hungry winged wonders to your bird feeder.
n 1 p.m. Friday, a naturalist and puppet team up to intrigue audiences with facts about ravens.
n 1 p.m. Saturday, owls, who are rumored to prefer the dark, take the spotlight.
