Longtime Alaska and Fritz Creek resident William D. "Bill" Rowe, 65, died at his home in Fritz Creek, Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, following a lengthy illness. A celebration of his life will be held this spring.
Bill Rowe was a quiet and gentle man, who loved humor but most of all loved the sound of the wind in his sails while sailing the sea aboard his boat the Lulu-B.
William D. 'Bill' Rowe
Bill and Mary Ann moved to Alaska in 1974 and married the following year. He was a professional photographer when they met, and after moving to Alaska he worked in the trades before moving to Homer where he was a commercial fisherman until becoming a jack of all trades.
Rowe also enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening, horseshoes and canoeing. He and Mary Ann canoed the Yukon River twice and many times paddled the Swanson River canoe trails. They enjoyed this almost as much as being together on their sailboat.
Rowe is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Fritz Creek; parents, H. Dee and Corrine Rowe of Modesto, Calif.; brother, Eric Rowe of Santa Cruz, Calif.; aunt, Betty Maas of Kauai; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel. Donations in his honor can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Rowe was born Oct. 8, 1944, in California. He graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1962. He then attended the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16.
