Homer master gardener, designer to be featured at Seattle garden show

Homer photographer, author and master gardener Brenda Adams will be a featured speaker at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, the second largest garden show in the United States.

The show is celebrating its 25th anniversary Feb. 17-21 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.

Adams is the author of “There’s a Moose in My Garden: Designing Gardens in Alaska and the Far North” (University of Alaska Press, 2013). Her most recent book, “Great Plants for Alaska and Other Cold Climates” will be released by University of Alaska Press in early 2017.

Adams teaches “Northern Garden Design and Creation” at the University of Alaska as well as the landscape design section of the Alaska Master Gardeners’ course.

She is the award-winning designer of Gardens By Design, which has designed more than 200 unique gardens for both residential and commercial clients in Alaska.

Adams will offer two presentations to the 55,000 attendees and 300 exhibitors expected to attend the February flower and garden show:

• On Friday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Hood Room, Adams will answer one of the most prevalent questions on the minds of gardeners everywhere with her presentation “Having It All: Beauty and Low Maintenance.”

In this seminar, Adams will offer a fresh perspective on ways to create a new garden or renovate an existing one to reduce maintenance. Attendees will gain a new understanding of the most important design concepts that will help them achieve their garden goals.

• On Saturday, Feb 20, at 5:45 p.m. in the Ranier Room, Adams will share her techniques for taking the notion of combination planting to a refreshing new level in her presentation, “Truly Compelling Combinations: Creating Sizzle and Subtlety.”

Adams will show how to use foliage, color, texture, form and other plant attributes to create combinations that exceed the beauty of each individual plant.

“Given her award-winning experience in designing more than 200 Alaskan and Northwest gardens, you will come away with a notebook full of exciting ideas,” according to a press release.

Adams is a long-time master gardener and member of Alaska’s Rock Garden Society, the Perennial Plant Association, Garden Writers’ Association, Alaska Master Gardeners and the Alaska Botanical Garden.

Her designs have received three prestigious awards in the Perennial Plant Association’s annual international competition. Her 2012 award was the PPA’s highest, the Honor Award. She also was awarded the PPA’s Merit Award in 2007 and in 2009 — the only Alaskan to receive either award.

Those planning to attend the Northwest Flower and Garden Show are encouraged to get their tickets now.
