Wrestlers bring home lots of wins

Both the Popeye and Anchor Kings wrestling clubs participated in the Arctic Warriors Ultimate Challenge in Wasilla last weekend. And both clubs brought home medals.

Popeye Wrestlers 

Popeye Wrestling Club traveled to Wasilla this weekend to participate in a two-day event for Arctic Warriors Ultimate Challenge.

Friday night Popeye wrestled Greco with 10 wrestlers participating. Wrestlers included Declan Barnard, Dallas Walker, Lucas Barnard, Mose Hayes, Seth I’nama, Ian Stovall, McKenzie Cook, Christopher Cudaback, Levi King and Tristen Cook.

Out of 10 wrestlers, Popeye had six top three placers: Dallas Walker placed third, Lucas Barnard placed second, Mose Hayes placed third, Christopher Cudaback placed first, Levi King placed second and Tristen Cook placed first.  

On Saturday, Popeye had 16 wrestlers,  but some of them were double registered, as there was a girls-only division.

Wrestlers for Saturday freestyle and girls only were Saoirse Cook, Dallas Walker, Nestor Kalugin, Lily King, Timothy Hatfield, Mina Cavasos, Mose Hayes, Sadie Blake, Zoe Adkins, Seth I’nama, Ian Stovall, McKenzie Cook, Christopher Cudaback, Levi King, Sierra Clark and Tristen Cook.

Out of 16 wrestlers Popeye brought home 11 top three medals: Saoirse Cook double medaled twice, once in boys bracket with second and once in girls brackets with first place.  

Mckenzie Cook wrestled both boys and girls and McKenzie Cook took first in the girls division.  Mina Cavasos also wrestled both boys and girls and brought home first place in girls bracket which she had to wrestle fellow Popeye wrestler Sade Blake for first place.  Sadie Blake continued on to wrestle and place second in girls. Other placers include: Dallas Walker third place; Nestor Kalugin, second place; Lily King, third place; Mose Hayes, first place; Seth I’nama, third place; Levi King, second place; Sierra Clark, third place; and Tristen Cook, second place.

Popeye will travel for a Friday, April 15, Greco at Tri-Valley and Saturday, April 16, freestyle at Anchorage Battle Cats.

top medals at weekend challenge

The Newman brothers were the sole competitors representing the Anchor Kings at the two-day Arctic Warriors Challenge.

Blake Newman placed second and brother Wayne placed first at Friday’s Greco tournament. Both boys wrestled hard, securing second place finishes at Saturday’s freestyle tournament. 

The team will next either participate in the Tri-Valley two-day tournament on April 15-16 or the April 16 tournament hosted by Alaska Battle Cats in Anchorage. 

This week’s wrestlers of the week were Zeke Magee, Soren Hoyer, Landan Branstetter and Hunter Harrington. The move of the week was the pass by. 

With three weeks left before the state tournament wrestlers are putting in their best efforts and striving for their personal best.
