Ellis Paul and Radoslav Lorkovic
play together in Homer on Friday 

Longtime friends and internationally touring folk-blues musicians Ellis Paul and Radoslav Lorkovic perform for the first time together in Homer at 8 p.m. Friday at Bunnell Street Arts Center. The concert combines Lorkovic’s vibrant blues musicianship on piano and accordion with Paul’s guitar and vocals and smart, witty songwriting. The two musicians have played together elsewhere, but never on the same stage in Homer. Admission is $20.


Bunnell hosts fundraiser

Sample a selection of cheeses prepared by Bunnell Street Arts Center board member Maura Brenin paired with a selection of locally brewed beers from the Homer Brewing Company from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Bunnell Street Arts Center. A fundraiser for Bunnell, admission is $20 each, and includes cheese and beer tastings. Additional beer is sold by the glass.


Photojournalist holds book talk

Former Anchorage Daily News award-winning photojournalist Jim Lavrakas holds a book talk and photo presentation for the Alaska release of his memoir, “Snap Decisions,” at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Kachemak Bay Campus. Now a Homer fishing guide, Lavrakas’ book includes many of the iconic photos he shot during his decades-long career. Copies of his book will be available for sale and Lavrakas will sign books after his presentation.


HCOA TheatreShakes presents
‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Actors in Homer Council on the Arts TheatreShakes program presents an abridged version of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the HCOA gallery. Admission is $5. The production is the culmination of the TheatreShakes youth theater program for students in grades 6 to 12. Special matinee performances for school classes are at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 16, with elders from the Homer Senior Citizens Center invited to the 2:30 p.m. showing.

Molly Ivins play shows next week

Alaska actor Elizabeth Ware portrays the late newspaper columnist Molly Ivins in “Red Hot Patriot,” a one-woman show full of scathing political observation. Presented by Cyrano’s Playhouse from Anchorage, the 80-minute show is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17 and 3 p.m. Nov. 18 at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Admission is a suggested $15 or pay as you can. Ivins was known for her withering descriptions of politicians all the way from the Texas state capitol to the White House. Actress Elizabeth Ware, under the direction of her husband, David Edgecombe, portrays the feisty Texan. Ware said, “I’ve told just about everybody it’s more fun that I’ve ever had on stage.”


‘F Magazine’ presents youth
art, writing competition

F Magazine presents its third-annual Youth Art and Writing Competition. For creative artists and writers in grades 7 to 12, the two art and writing winners of the statewide competition receive a scholarship and transportation to the Sitka Fine Arts Summer Camp. Winners also will be published in F Magazine and showcased at Out North Contemporary Art House. Winning writers will have their work read aloud by experienced readers and actors and the entire event will be streamed online for students unable to attend. The deadline to enter is Jan. 20. For more information, visit The submissions are judged locally. 49 Writers, the Anchorage-based writing organization, will jury the writing entries, and artist and University of Alaska Anchorage art instructor Jimmy Riordan will oversee the judging of art entries.


Theme of contest: mentoring

In honor of National Mentoring Month in January, Big Brothers Big Sisters is sponsoring a writing contest for poetry and short story non-fiction. All entries must address the theme “how mentoring has positively affected your life.” The contest is open to the public for K-12th grade and adult category areas. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Nov. 30.  Prizes will be awarded for winners in each category area. Winners also will be asked to read their entries at a BBBS event in January.
