There’s a chill in the air, says the Betster. And the ground, and the car, and the corners of the house that can’t seem to be reached by the heating system.

If any of us were in denial about Old Man Winter’s arrival, there should be no doubt that he’s on his merry way after the last few nights of disconcertingly cold temperatures. He’s coming, folks — creeping his way painstakingly along in such small increments that the Betster wishes he would just hurry up and be here in full force already. A hard patch of ground here, a frozen windshield there. It’s basically torture, at this point.

Not to worry, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to do in winter, as well. It’s maybe even more important to get outside and moving during the dark months, since vitamin D is severely lacking and the constant doldrums can lead to one becoming a bit too stagnant.

At the same time, if you truly just want a way to stay out of the cold other than staring at the walls of your own home, check out these best bets for inspiration:

BEST BLADED BET: A warm, comfy seat, a bucket of hot buttery popcorn and a classic ‘80s film to bring on the nostalgia — what could be better? The Homer Theatre will show the 1982 version of Blade Runner at 6 p.m. today. The event is a Friends of the Homer Library fundraiser and costs $6 for general admission. But the more costume-inclined among you can get in free by dressing up as Pris the Replicant.

BEST BOOGIE DOWN BET: One surefire way to get the blood good and pumping is stopping by one of the Salmonfest/Alice’s Champagne Palace Music Series installments. This Friday, it’s John Kadlecik at 9 p.m. Kadlecik is a singer, songwriter, and musician who can play most string instruments but is primarily known for being a guitar-slinging sideman to Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir in the band Furthur. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

BEST “BOO!” BET: The 13th Annual Haunted Hickory event will take place from 4-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Coast Guard Pier on the Honer Spit. It is held on the USCGG Hickory, with a suggested donation of two nonperishable food items, with donations going to the Homer Food Pantry.

BEST BARD BET: The Homer Library is perhaps one of the best places to snuggle up in winter time. You can do just that with “Evenings With Shakespeare: Hamlet,” an event being held at 6 p.m. on Sunday. It’s part of a three-part class, where the group will read together, discuss, and enjoy the great “Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” Participants must bring their own copy. A Folgers Edition is recommended, but not required.
