BEST SCIENCE OPEN HOUSE BET: Curious what’s new at the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve? Stop by their facility on Kachemak Drive for an open house event on Thursday, March 6 from 2-6 p.m.! This is your chance to visit chat with researchers about the past year of weather, water quality and biomonitoring, and ask questions about coastal topics relevant to our community. KBNERR staff will have hands-on demonstrations, tools and scientific posters to help you explore local research and enhance your understanding of Kachemak Bay ecology. The reserve manager and program coordinators will also give a presentation at 5:15 p.m. to provide an overview of the research reserve’s work. Attendees can sign up for upcoming opportunities to engage through community monitoring, education, training and the KBNERR community council. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be provided. 2181 Kachemak Drive.

BEST KNOW YOUR LAND BET: Join Kachemak Bay Campus for the next Know Your Land seminar, “The Great Mulch Study,” on Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m. Glenna Gannon, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Food Systems at UAF’s Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension (IANRE) will be presenting on how different mulches affect soil moisture and temperature. All Know Your Land talks are free, held hybrid in-person at the KBC’s Pioneer Hall in room P202, and livestreamed via Zoom. BEST COMMUNITY COUNCIL BET: The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Community Council will hold their quarterly meeting on Friday, March 7 from noon to 3 p.m. in KBC’s Pioneer Hall. This committed group of local residents and agency partners meet quarterly to connect with KBNERR programs; this meeting is open to the public. 533 E Pioneer Ave.

BEST AIRPORT UPDATES BET: The Homer Airport Improvements project team invites Homer residents to a public meeting on Friday, March 7 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Homer City Hall. Learn about the upcoming 2025 construction schedule, including the airport closure schedule. This event is supported by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. BEST HEALTH AND WELLNESS BET: Join South Peninsula Hospital for Wellness Wednesdays, a free evening of health education, food and yoga held weekly on Wednesdays at Kachemak Bay Campus from 5:30-7:30 p.m. On March 12, Christine Olson, board certified family nurse practitioner with the Aurora Kidney Clinic in Anchorage, will give a presentation. Olson is passionate about chronic kidney disease management, hypertension education and helping patients optimize quality of life. Kidney diseases happen when your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter your blood. With chronic kidney disease, the damage tends to happen over the course of several years and can be caused by a range of factors including diabetes and high blood pressure.
