Filmmaker starts Kickstarter project for ‘Heart of Alaska’

Homer filmmaker Bjørn Olson has started a Kickstarter project to raise funds for “Heart of Alaska,” a film about Seldovia adventurers Erin McKittrick and Hig Higman’s journey around Cook Inlet with their two children, Katmai, 4, and Lituya, 2, from March to July of 2013.

“Outreach and education are important components to this family, and ‘Heart of Alaska,’ the movie, will be an opportunity to share, with a broad audience, the conversations, chance encounters, agony and pure joy of adventuring with small children in an ancient land with an uncertain future,” Olson said.

Beyond the adventure, the family also carried with them a question: “What do you think the future holds for Alaska?”

As part of the film, Olson said he plans to visit Cook Inlet communities and address that conversation by interviewing the people the family interacted with while also bringing the viewer into the landscape using the footage the family took along their journey.
