Homer’s Best Bets

The fireweed might be going to fluff, but we still have a few more weeks of warmth and sunshine to enjoy this fabulous town and amazing place. Seize the sunshine while you finish up those chores and get ready for, uh, fall, perhaps with these best bets:

BEST TACO BET: They say the best way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, and tacos are the best way to this Betster’s heart! The Betster’s heart grows even bigger after finding out that eating tacos can support art, as well! Grace Ridge Brewing Inc is hosting an Eat Tacos for Art fundraiser for the Alaska World Arts Festival this Saturday, Aug. 28 from 5-7 p.m. The all you can eat fish tacos event costs $10. The Alaska World Arts Festival will be Sept. 10-23 and will feature online and in-person events. Grace Ridge Brewing is located at 3388 B St.

BEST AUCTION BET: The online auction to support the Loved & Lost Memorial Bench for Duffy and all those missing continues through Sunday, Aug. 29. The auction features numerous items and packages for a variety of ages, interests and budgets. Visit 32auctions.com/lovedandlostmemorial to bid, buy or donate.

BEST WILDLIFE BET: Interested in how Sandhill Cranes migrate and populate in Homer? The Kachemak Crane Watch is hosting one of its annual count days from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, and they need help from citizen scientists to count how many cranes Betsters can find. The location, time and day the cranes were sighted can be submitted to reports@cranewatch.org or by calling 907-235-6262. Additionally, join the watch group at Beluga Slough at the end of the gravel trail on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the evening crane fly-in.
