Anchor Point poet Shannon L. Schrader is within $100 of her goal to help fund production of “Out of Darkness,” a collection of poems she wrote about dealing with depression. Photographer Jessica Rawls illustrated the book. Through Kickstarter, the crowd funding program, Schrader has raised $707 of her $800 goal. Donors who contribute $25 or more get two signed copies of her book, one for themselves and one to donate to the crisis center of their choice. The 40-page book includes 18 of Schrader’s poems.

Schrader, 50, said she started writing poetry after suffering depression and being unable to express herself.

“One night, unable to sleep, I wrote down my feelings. They came out in the form of two poems,” she said.

When she showed her poems to her therapist, her therapist said they were profound and explained her mental state perfectly, Schrader said.

“I started writing poetry and began to heal,” she said. “I became compelled to reach out to anyone suffering in silence and maybe inspire them to seek help … I found my voice in poetry.”

Kickstarter funding will help pay for part of the book’s cost, with the rest paid for by Schrader. She plans to publish the book later this month or in September. For more information on the book, including a book teaser produced by Rawls, visit kck.st/1n7fr2k.
