The Native Pride Dancers, an indigenous dance group based in St. Paul, Minnesota, will visit Homer for a performance at 6 p.m. today at Homer High School. Admission is free and the event is open to the community. This performance is presented by the Native Youth Community Project. There will be a Public Talk with Anam Thubten from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at Many Rivers Studio. Anam Thubten grew up in Tibet and at an early age began to practice in the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the founder and spiritual advisor of Dharmata Foundation, teaching widely in the US, Europe and Asia. He is the author of several books, including Embracing Each Moment, No Self, No Problem, and The Magic of Awareness. Through sharing his wisdom and personal experience on the spiritual path, Anam Thubten brings alive the timeless teachings of Buddhism.

Join the Friends of the Homer Library to celebrate the release of two new books by Alaskan authors. “Bury the Lead” by Cassondra Windwalker is a psychological thriller, and “22 and the Mother of 11” by Betty Epps Arnett is a memoir about a fresh college graduate from Tennessee who becomes a house mother at the Jesse Lee Home for Children. The Kachemak Bay Research Reserve seeks public comment at its Community Council meeting to be held noon Sept. 19 at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center Auditorium. Pursuant to the federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, a public meeting will be held as part of the federal performance evaluation of the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Quarterly Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Community Council Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to receive public comments regarding the operation and implementation of the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Written comments are encouraged, and participation at the public meeting is not required for submission. The South Peninsula Amateur Radio Club (SPARC), based in Homer, offers free classes to assist in passing the FCC examination to become a licensed Technician class operator. Wearable Arts returns this year for a show on Nov. 17 at Land’s End Resort. Sponsored by the Homer fiber Arts Collective in collaboration with Bunnell Street Arts Center, fiber artists near and far are invited to submit works. Anchor Point Senior Citizens

The Anchor Point Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

The center serves Thursday night dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Bingo is at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Friday nights. The Helping Hands Thrift Store is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a public reading by award-winning visiting writer Hannah Tinti at 6:30 p.m. tonight, co-sponsored by 49 Writers. Tinti is the author of three books of fiction. Her short story collection, “Animal Crackers,” was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway award. Her best-selling novel, “The Good Thief,” is a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her new novel, “The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley,” has been optioned to become a film. It has been nominated for an Edgar Award, and was named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR, The Washington Post and Paste Magazine.

Asia Freeman’s “Drawing on the Right side of the Brain Crash Course” starts Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. and runs weekly until Nov. 4. The cost is $195.

Join South Peninsula Hospital and Katie Ostrom, MD, OB-GYN, Homer Medical Center, for the next “Walk with a Doc.” from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 8 at SPARC (600 Sterling Hwy next to Homer Middle School). Dr. Ostrom, hospital Chief of Staff, will give a brief talk titled “Gynecological Cancers: Am I at Risk?” then participants will spend the rest of the hour walking at their own pace, chatting and asking any questions. This is a free event, open to all ages and abilities. There is parking up at the SPARC and down below in the Homer Middle School Parking lot. The West Wing of Homer Medical Center offers a free series of newborn classes by certified nurse midwives. The topic on Tuesday, Sept. 11 will be breast feeding. The Rotary Health Fair invites exhibitors to provide learning centers to educate and encourage active involvement in learning about health and wellness. South Peninsula Hospital and Hospice of Homer are partnering to sponsor a community giveaway event of incontinence supplies which have been donated to the two organizations. The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the SPH Training Center, at 203 West Pioneer Avenue. All are invited to pick up free supplies of briefs, pull-ups, inserts, wipes, and disposable chux pads (disposable lightweight underpads). These supplies have been donated to these organizations to give to others in need, and there are large quantities available at this time. Watch for signs, and use the back entrance to the building.
