SPARC, the South Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, holds a special ham radio event, “North America’s Most Westerly Highway Point,” starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, and ending Sunday afternoon at the Halibut Campground in Anchor Point. SPARC will set up and operate portable radio stations. Stop by and learn and even participate in amateur radio operations.

There will be a Square and Contra Dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at West Homer Elementary School. Music is by Spit City Slickers. Beginners are welcome. Please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to dance in. Admission is $7 adult, free for children under age 16.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) reminds drivers that they may now use studded tires on Alaska’s paved highways and roads north of latitude 60. Studded tires will be legal to use in Alaska communities located south of latitude 60 on Oct. 1. While the 60th parallel also crosses just south of Ninilchik on the Sterling Highway, Alaska law permits drivers to use studded tires on any paved portion of the Sterling Highway beginning Sept. 15 of each year.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game invites the public to participate in scoping to share information and concerns about the Kachemak Bay and Fox River Flats Critical Habitat Areas. A meeting is held from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. This is the first step in revising the management plan which was adopted in 1993. The Kachemak Bay Birders’ next meeting is 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in the Auditorium. Following the meeting Betty Siegel will do a presentation on “Madagascar Birds and Wildlife.” Betty spent four weeks in Madagascar where 80 percent of all wildlife is endemic (only found in that country). Anchor Point Senior Citizens

Our warm summer produced a good tomato crop for most folks lucky enough to have a greenhouse, but no matter how we try, there are always some that don’t ripen during our season. Cooperative Extension Service has a free publication, “A Harvest of Green Tomatoes,” which provides ripening methods and tasty recipes for those green fruit to help you use all your harvest.
