Homer Council on the Arts hosts live performances, workshops, youth art opportunities and more this spring and summer.
Sip and Craft: Watercolor Bookmarks
Hosted by HCOA and held at Grace Ridge Brewing, this watercolor bookmark is open to those 21 and older or under 21 accompanied by a parent or guardian. Artist Jenna Gerrety will introduce community members to basic watercolor techniques and then lead participants in painting bookmarks. Materials and patterns will be provided, or participants can create a freestyle design. Friday, March 14, 5-7 p.m. Suggested donation $5 to $10. RSVP required at homerart.org.
Jubilee! Call for Youth Art
Young artists pre-K to Grade 12 are invited to submit work for HCOA’s annual spring exhibit Jubilee! showcasing art in a variety of mediums, including traditional 2-D art forms, ceramics, piano performances, windsocks and more. All submissions should include title of work, materials and artist’s name, grade level or class and school. Submission information can be made by parents, guardians, teachers and students by email to HCOA at hcoa@homerart.org. Submissions are open now through Saturday, March 22.
Unit Souzou
HCOA and the Alaska Japanese Club present Taiko drumming group Unit Souzou, an expressive blend of taiko and Japanese folk dance. Wednesday, March 26, 7 p.m. at the Homer Mariner Theater. $15 Youth/$35 General/ $30 HCOA Member. Advance tickets at homerart.org and at the door.
Intro to Scrimshaw
Community members can learn the ancient art of Scrimshaw with master Homer artist Conrad Field. The class curriculum is designed to guide students progressively through carving techniques on various materials, ending with a mounted piece of art on bone or antler. Classes are at HCOA on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, March 31 to April 28, no class on April 15. $185 General/ $165 HCOA Member. More information and registration at homerart.org.
Black Tie Gala at the Norman Lowell Gallery
Join HCOA and the Norman Lowell Foundation for a night of music and art during a fundraising event to benefit the foundation. The evening includes a performance by the Glacier Quartet, a vocal showcase by Jim Anderson, Britny Bradshaw, Emily Reidel and William Bradshaw, accompanied by Ann Griffin Reed. Light refreshments and signature mocktails will be included. Friday, May 16, 6 p.m. $125/person. Tickets at homerart.org.
2025 Ron Senungetuk Summer Youth Arts Scholarship
Homer-area students currently enrolled in grades 6-11 are invited to apply for summer arts scholarships. These scholarships are to be used on intensive artistic endeavors during the summer months, including either summer art programs or private lessons from local teachers. Applications open Monday, March 17 through Saturday, April 26 at homerart.org.
Art in the Park Summer Day Camps
Homer artist Sharlene Cline leads this five-day Art Camp for Homer youth ages 5 to 12. Held at HCOA, Bishop’s Beach and Karen Hornaday Park, possible activities may include tie dye T-shirts, nature-inspired sketches and paintings, ceramic beads nature printmaking, creature needle felting, games, face painting and more. Sessions are Mondays to Fridays, ages 5 to 7, 10 a.m. to noon, $120/week; ages 8 to 12, 1-4 p.m., $175 week. June Session runs June 2-6. July session is July 28 to Aug. 1. August session is Aug. 4-8. 2025 Mary Epperson Folk Music Camp
Open to youth ages 8-17, the Mary Epperson Folk Music Camp provides a fun opportunity for youth who have been studying privately, learning from friends or YouTube, or completely new to music, to explore a range of instruments. Monday to Friday, July 14-18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $300 for the week. Registration opens Monday, March 17 at homerart.org.
