A petition to have a Greater Kachemak Fire & Emergency Service Area was signed by 216 voters and was certified. The effort to have a new fire service area covering from the mouth of Kachemak Bay to the Caribou Hills raised questions about whether a proposition would be approved by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly while the City of Homer’s petition for annexing more land was still in process.

The Homer Police arrested a man who tried to board a plane to Anchorage with a concealed gun. The police had been tipped off by private citizens that the man, who was from Fairbanks, had been drinking and was suicidal.

When police patted him down before he boarded a plane from Homer to Anchorage, they found a loaded .22-caliber Jennings semiautomatic pistol along with two boxes on ammunition.

Three people were elected to serve on the “Homer Electric Board” at its annual meeting, which was held at the Family Theatre on May 4, 1970. Seldovia resident Cathy Knight, who was Miss Homer 1970, leant a helping hand at the meeting along with Miss Kenai.
