The Personal Watercraft Club of Alaska mobilized its members to oppose a decision that had been made in July to ban personal watercraft, also known as JetSkis, in most parts of Kachemak Bay State Park. The Alaska State Snowmobile Association also joined the effort to reverse the ban.

Rising musician Juel Kilcher (as the artist Jewel then spelled her name) held a concert and auction to raise funds to attend her first semester at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. She raised $4,400 for her tuition and hoped to raise $3,000 more to pay for the second semester, said her father, Atz Kilcher.
