How We Ranked the Best Stretch Mark Creams

Ranking the best stretch mark creams was a difficult task. It’s easy for companies to claim their product is the best stretch mark skin cream. However, most companies cannot even back up their advertised benefits. To separate the best and worst stretch mark creams, we used these ranking factors:

Clinically Proven Ingredients

There are dozens of natural ingredients that have been proven to prevent stretch marks and help existing stretch marks fade. We preferred our top stretch mark creams to use these ingredients instead of untested ones. The best stretch mark creams and serums use high-quality, science-backed ingredients in their formula.

Clinical Trials

Most skincare companies don’t invest in clinical trials because of the cost, including stretch mark creams. However, a few of the best stretch mark skin creams have been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of stretch marks in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. Many of these clinical trials have even been published in peer-reviewed journals. We ranked it higher if a stretch mark cream was clinically proven to work.

Formulated by Dermatologists or Doctors

Many of the best stretch mark creams are endorsed or formulated by dermatologists, doctors, or other health professionals. We gave credit to stretch mark creams advocated or developed by medical professionals because it adds a layer of legitimacy.

Honest Advertised Benefits

Some skincare companies selling stretch mark creams make unrealistic and ridiculous claims about their products. They may claim to eliminate stretch marks overnight, just to give you an example. This is impossible and completely unrealistic. We preferred stretch mark creams that were open and honest about their potential benefits within a realistic timeframe.

Overall Ease of Use & Absorption

Some stretch mark creams can be unpleasant to apply. They might be gross, sticky, or foul-smelling. Other stretch mark skin creams are easy to apply, have a pleasant scent, and are just downright better than other stretch mark creams. We considered absorption, fragrance, and overall ease of use in our rankings.

Effectiveness on Various Types of Stretch Marks

Some stretch mark creams seem to work specifically for pregnancy stretch marks, whereas others work on stretch marks all over your body. Generally speaking, we prefer that stretch mark creams work on any part of your body.

Overall Price & Value

Whether you’re on a budget and can only afford a $10 skin cream, or you’ve got the budget to afford a premium stretch mark cream that costs $100, we wanted you to get the best value. Some people can afford premium ingredients, while others just want stretch mark creams that are still effective. We considered both price and value in our rankings and preferred the best stretch mark creams at any cost.

Money-Back Guarantee

Like any skin cream or supplement, some stretch mark creams may work for some and not work for others. That’s why we preferred stretch mark creams that had an explicit money-back guarantee. At least a 30-day money-back guarantee backs the best stretch mark creams since it takes time for stretch mark creams to work. If you are not satisfied, though, you should be able to receive a complete refund.

Customer Reviews

The best way to determine the best stretch mark creams is to look at customer reviews. Customer reviews will let you figure out the average experience of customers. Did these customers experience any results? Did they feel their stretch marks faded? Did they experience any side effects like rashes or allergic reactions? Would they recommend the product to their family or friends? These were all questions we had to ask to get in the head of customers. The better customers felt about a stretch mark cream, the better we ranked it.

Common Causes of Stretch Marks

Most stretch marks are caused by one of three things – pregnancy, obesity, or puberty (in that exact order). It is estimated anywhere from 45 to 90% of women will develop stretch marks when pregnant. However, anyone can experience stretch marks when rapidly gaining or losing weight, regardless of age.

Other common causes of stretch marks include:

  • Growth spurts during childhood and puberty
  • Rapid weight gain, which can lead to stretch marks in both women and men
  • Pregnancy
  • Breast implant surgery
  • Bodybuilding
  • Taking large amounts of steroids
  • Certain illnesses like Marfan syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

It is also possible to experience stretch marks simply because of genetics. Some research suggests that stretch marks run in families.

Where Do Stretch Marks Occur Most Frequently?

Stretch marks can appear anywhere on your body. However, stretch marks most commonly develop in these areas:

  • Shoulders
  • Arms
  • Butt
  • Breasts
  • Back
  • Stomach or torso

Methods for Stretch Mark Removal

There are numerous different ways to try to remove stretch marks. The five most stretch mark removal methods include:

Stretch Mark Creams

Stretch Mark Creams are the first method individuals try to eliminate stretch marks. A good stretch mark cream uses several natural ingredients to steadily decrease the appearance of stretch marks steadily. These stretch mark creams are easy to apply – just rub them on your stretch marks daily to steadily alleviate stretch marks over several weeks or months. Some creams stimulate collagen production, while others help heal scar tissue at the cellular level—some are proven to work, while no scientific data back others.

Radiofrequency Treatments

Some people use radiofrequency treatments to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. These treatments lift and tighten your skin using specific radio frequencies. It is a non-invasive way to eliminate stretch mark creams that appear to work by stimulating collagen production. Some of the most common radiofrequency treatments include Venus Freeze and Thermage.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another stretch mark treatment that is non-invasive to resurface your skin. During this procedure, you exfoliate the top layer of your skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. It appears especially useful for removing stretch marks that are typically less than a year old. It also seems to be especially effective when used in conjunction with other treatment options, not on its own.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is growing in popularity, and many clinics now offer adults the ability to remove their stretch marks with this type of procedure. Laser therapy works by using fractional lasers to safely penetrate the outer layer of your skin to reach the deepest layers. It creates thermal energy to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration without harming the skin’s outer layer. This helps slowly remove stretch marks over time.

Other Treatments

Other methods to eliminate stretch marks include chemical peels, ultrasounds, cosmetic surgeries, and various laser therapies.

How Do Stretch Mark Creams Work?

Stretch mark creams contain several natural ingredients that help stretch marks fade. For example, some stretch mark creams contain collagen boosters.

Others contain an ingredient known as tretinoin (Retin-A), a retinoid related to vitamin A. It appears to stimulate collagen production. Other stretch mark creams contain almond oil, olive oil, or other natural ingredients to stimulate collagen production.

In general, stretch mark creams alleviate the appearance of stretch marks over weeks and months by stimulating collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps form skin tissues throughout your body. It is the most abundant type of protein in your body too. As you age, your collagen production declines, which can cause skin sagging and aging, as well as stretch marks.

Not every stretch mark cream fights stretch marks from the outside. Some stretch mark creams simply cover up stretch marks using self-tanner, body makeup, or other methods. These creams can reduce the actual visibility of stretch marks, but they won’t remove them long-term.

Overall, most skin creams for stretch marks contain proven ingredients to support the body’s natural healing processes.

Best Ingredients in Stretch Mark Creams

Stretch mark creams can contain any number of natural ingredients to help eliminate stretch marks quickly. Remember, we are not talking about body makeup or self-tanners, which simply cover up stretch marks but do not address stretch marks to remove them permanently.

Here are the eight most common ingredients in stretch mark creams:

  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is rich in fatty acids that might support the skin’s natural biological healing processes. It also helps to moisturize the skin.
  • Cocoa Butter: Cocoa butter is used in various skincare products because it has been shown to soothe the skin, moisturize it, and heal damaged skin. Some research suggests it can minimize the appearance of stretch marks too.
  • Bitter Almond Oil: Bitter almond oil has been used in various skin products for centuries. In one study, researchers found that women using bitter almond oil had fewer stretch marks than women who took a placebo skin cream.
  • Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E has been shown to support collagen production while having potent anti-inflammatory effects. Many people apply vitamin E oil daily to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and support overall skin health.
  • Shea Butter: One of the base ingredients in many stretch mark creams on our rankings because it nourishes and heals damaged skin.
  • Tretinoin (Retin-A): Retin-A is a retinoid known as tretinoin. Studies have shown that a unique version of vitamin A can boost collagen production. It is most commonly used to treat wrinkles or fine lines, although it may help with stretch marks – especially with newer stretch marks.
  • Plant and Herbal Collagen Boosters: Some studies have found the right blend of herbal extracts and plant extracts can support better collagen production. As the most abundant protein in the body, it needs collagen to maintain the health of all of its connective tissues, including your skin. Higher collagen levels may help to alleviate stretch marks by enabling your skin to heal faster.
  • Centella Asiatica: Sometimes simply referred to as “Centella,” Centella Asiatica is a prized herbal oil commonly added to stretch mark creams. Several studies have shown that it may help to fade stretch marks, moisturize skin, and enhance skin elasticity.

Scientific Evidence for Stretch Mark Creams

There’s a limited amount of evidence that proves topical treatments can reduce or eliminate the appearance of stretch marks. Sure, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that olive oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. However, there’s only a limited amount of scientific evidence to prove these treatments work.

With that said, there is some evidence that using specific ingredients can reduce the appearance of stretch marks more rapidly than others, for example. We’ll review some of this research below:

In a 2013 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetology Science, researchers examined the efficacy of commercially available stretch mark creams for preventing stretch marks in pregnant women. Participants were given a stretch mark cream or a placebo in the study. After roughly eighteen months, researchers analyzed the effects.

Researchers found the control group (the group taking the placebo) saw an increase in the incidence of stretch marks by 17.8%. That’s significantly higher than the treated group, in which only 6.3% of participants developed stretch marks at some point during their pregnancy. Researchers also noted a large discrepancy in the severity of stretch marks between the two groups, suggesting that stretch mark creams can significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks in pregnant women.

A separate study did not find similar results as the first study. In this study, researchers reviewed 11 studies to date that analyzed the effects of stretch mark creams at eliminating stretch marks. Researchers found little evidence across these 11 studies suggesting that any topical cream will eliminate stretch marks. However, these researchers suggested that more randomized; controlled studies are needed to verify this claim.

Nevertheless, the American Academy of Dermatology Association, or the AAD, believes that stretch mark creams may still be helpful. Although the AAD acknowledges that most stretch mark creams won’t be able to eliminate stretch marks in just a single night, they claim the science supports the use for stretch mark creams or serums in a few instances:

When used on new stretch marks (older stretch marks seem unaffected by stretch mark creams)

When you massage the product directly into your stretch marks (Simply allowing skin creams to soak into the skin rather than rubbing it in appears to be ineffective)

When you apply a product daily for several weeks (even the most potent stretch mark creams take several weeks for any benefits to develop)

The AAD also notes that hyaluronic acid and tretinoin are the two most effective ingredients that seem to help stretch marks fade when applied topically. These ingredients can make stretch marks much less noticeable.

The AAD isn’t alone either. According to the Mayo Clinic, retinoid cream combined with tretinoin appears to help rebuild collagen, a vital protein for skin health, making stretch marks look like normal skin. This is why so many stretch mark creams use it.

In a 1996 study, researchers found significant evidence that topical application of tretinoin can eliminate the appearance of early stretch marks. In this study, 22 patients applied a placebo or a skin cream with a 0.1% tretinoin concentration. This study lasted six months, and after six months, the tretinoin group had significant improvements in the appearance of their stretch marks. Researchers noted that tretinoin appeared to work after just two months of treatment.

In general, experts agree that more research is needed to verify how effective stretch mark creams are. However, preliminary evidence suggests that high-quality stretch mark creams with the right ingredients may be able to reduce the appearance and severity of stretch marks – especially if you start applying these creams early.

Side Effects of Stretch Mark Creams

Typically speaking, as long as you follow the recommended instructions on your stretch mark cream, then you are unlikely to experience side effects while using a cream.

However, if you experience any side effects, you should discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor. In rare cases, skin creams have been known to cause irritation, pain, or rashes as the application site.

If you are unsure whether a stretch mark cream is suitable for you, then you should consult your doctor before using a stretch mark cream.

FAQs about Stretch Mark Creams

Our expert team has gotten plenty of questions about stretch marks, why they occur, stretch mark creams, and more. Here are the answers to your most frequently asked questions.
