Committee’s priorities misguided

I strongly support construction of a new police station, minus the $1.297 million firing range. However, I oppose locating the new station at the HERC site unless the design team produces an acceptable conceptual plan for both the police station and a future fire station on this site.

The current design for the proposed fire station is extremely inadequate for efficient work flow and accessibility.  The Public Safety Building Review Committee has misguided priorities to preserve or reuse the existing buildings on the site instead of focusing on the best layout for the new facility.

If they will not design an optimally functional fire station, the site should be retained for a recreational center, for which it is ideally suited. The police station could be built on a much smaller parcel, perhaps on the new city lot on Heath Street above the post office.
