Fatal collision near Anchor Point closes highway for hours

Crash killed Anchor Point woman.

A two-vehicle head-on collision near Anchor Point left one dead and sent another to the hospital last Friday, according to a dispatch from Alaska State Troopers.

On Saturday, troopers identified the person killed as Bertha Sargeant, age 56 of Anchor Point. Next of kin have been notified.

The dispatch says that shortly after noon troopers received a call about the collision near Mile 162 Sterling Highway, which is located between Homer and Anchor Point near Blackwater Bend.

The collision involved a Dodge pickup truck and a Kia SUV, which collided in the southbound lane of the highway. The driver of the pickup was reported to be complaining of back and chest pain, and was transported to South Peninsula Hospital for treatment. Sargeant, the driver of the SUV, was deceased when troopers and emergency medical staff arrived.

A Department of Public Safety advisory was issued following the collision, announcing a highway closure in both directions and directing drivers to a detour on the Old Sterling Highway. The road was closed until nearly 5 p.m.

State troopers are actively investigating the collision, per the dispatch, and ask any with information to call Alaska State Troopers at 907-262-4453.
