Fugitives arrested after traffic stop for broken brake light

A couple wanted on grand theft charges in Florida will be extradited south after Alaska State Troopers made a traffic stop on their car for a broken brake light. Michael C. Estes, 55, and Susie L. Estes, 60, were arrested on Aug. 18 by Trooper David Chaffin after a records check showed they both had arrest warrants out of Pinellas County, Fla.

According to a criminal complaint, at about 9:50 p.m. Aug. 18, Chaffin stopped a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder with Alaska plates driven by Michael Estes on the Sterling Highway near Ohlson Lane in Homer after the trooper noticed the brake lights weren’t working. Chaffin ran the names of Michael and Susie Estes through the National Crime Information Center, or NCIC, system, and found warrants for each out of Tierra Verde, Fla., on felony theft charges of more than $300 in value. Chaffin checked with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and confirmed that Florida authorities would pursue extradition of the couple.

Michael Estes also was charged with driving while license suspended for a Florida driver’s license.
