It takes a village to raise readers

Once again Homer Homemakers FCE thanks American Legion General Buchner Post No. 16 for its generous donation in support of the club’s Raise-a- Reader® literacy project. At a January meeting, members assembled 85 packets. The parents of each baby born at South Peninsula Hospital or the Homer Birthing and Wellness Center is to receive a packet.

The donated funds are used to buy books (at a discount from Ulmer’s Drug and Hardware) and produce printed materials that tell parents about the importance of reading to and using language with babies and young children as well as a list of books available at the Homer Public Library that are appropriate for very young children.

In addition, the library provides a schedule of children’s programs that it sponsors and an invitation for parents to get a library card for their baby.

Sprout Family Services contributes information about and a form for registering a child in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Sincere thanks to the American Legion, Ulmer’s, the library, and Sprout for their support of this local literacy project!
