Micciche sworn in as borough mayor

Micciche received more than 50% of votes cast during the Feb. 14 special election

Peter Micciche was sworn in Monday as mayor of the Kenai Peninsula Borough in the Betty J. Glick Assembly Chambers in Soldotna. Micciche, who was joined by his family and Dr. Keith Hamilton of Alaska Christian College, was elected during a special mayoral election held Feb. 14.

Micciche, who is a former state lawmaker, mayor of Soldotna and Soldotna City Council member, will serve until the borough’s next regular election in October. He will then have the opportunity to run for a full term as mayor, which he has previously said he intends to do.

Micciche was sworn in Monday by Kenai Peninsula Borough Deputy Borough Clerk Michele Turner. Also in attendance were Kenai Peninsula Borough Clerk Cactus Moloney and Dr. Keith Hamilton, who offered a prayer after Micciche signed his oath of office.

Because Micciche received more than 50% of all votes cast during the special election, the borough did not need to hold a runoff election, which the assembly had scheduled, if needed, for early March. Kenai Peninsula Borough code requires that borough mayors be elected with a majority of votes cast.

Micciche succeeds Mike Navarre as mayor. The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly appointed Navarre to the position last fall following the resignation of Charlie Pierce.
