National Poppy Day is May 26

As part of Memorial Day weekend events, May 26 has been designated National Poppy Day. The American Legion encourages all patriotic Americans to wear or display a poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope. The American Legion Post 16 family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, distributes poppies by placing donation cans at local businesses. Members also will be distributing poppies from 10 a.m.-6 p.m May 26 and 27 at Safeway.

“Wearing a poppy on Memorial weeknd is done to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and as symbol of hope for the generations to come who will answer our nation’s call to military service,” said Mike Morawitz, Commander of American Legion Post 16. “It is important for Americans to remember that we have an entirely new group of veterans, and supporting them and their families is absolutely essential.”

All donations received during National Poppy Day will be used by the American Legion to support the future of local veterans and active-dute military personnel and their families.
