People’s voice needs representation

Some years ago as I stood in the national archives building and read from the original copy of our Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, I could not help but reflect on Lincoln’s closing words in his Gettysburg address ”…and that government of  the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

My sole interest in running for city council is to represent the voice of the people and that which benefits the whole of our community. Having lived here the majority of my life, and now in the throes of raising six children here, my hope is to be a part of what will make this community affordable; by generating a sustainable and employable economy for our residents and future generations.

We need to pursue shovel-ready projects that produce the best chances of success in economic growth and infusion. Homer is a top notch destination for so many types of activities — we need to capitalize on that potential.

The mark of an efficient government is one that can provide the same level of service for less money or more services for the same amount of money. We have been at the “less money” level for a number of years and continue to see that dollar amount fall. Homer residents are faced with a decision on what level of these services they want and how much they are willing to pay to maintain that level.

I am sure that our citizens will get it right at the ballot. They are smart enough to recognize the needs over the wants, and will fund the same. Taking ownership of this process inspires confidence and trust in those chosen to represent it.

I believe that the more trusted our elected officials are by the electorate the more they are willing to entrust to them in order to provide needed services. That trust is gained through how we choose to spend money, and the long term implications of that expenditure.

In the end,  Homer will fair just fine. There may need to be a few tweaks along the way but that is what growth is all about. We will get it right. It has been an honor to be included in this discussion and I appreciate all who have supported my desire to serve the city.

Remember, your voice will always be the most important in this process … so make it heard, and own it!
