Profs present Bristol Bay studies

Catherine Knott and Alan Boraas, Kachemak Bay Campus and Kenai River Campus professors of anthropology, will present a talk at 6:30 p.m. today on their recent research for the Environmental Protection Agency about the cultural importance of salmon to the people of Bristol Bay. The presentation will be given at Kachemak Bay Campus.

After exploring the Dena’ina and Yup’ik perspective on mining’s impacts to the Bristol Bay area, Knott and Boraas have concluded that a degradation of water in the area could have devastating, nutritional, cultural and religious effects in villages of that region.

The study was part of a larger impact assessment conducted by the EPA.
