Contests, Scholarships, exchange opportunities

Veterans of Foreign Wars: Students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in the “Patriot’s Pen” essay contest. Top national winners receive at least $500; the first place award is $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. This year’s theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point will award a first, second and third place winner for local entries. Deadline is Friday. Call Jennifer at 399-7572.

Veterans of Foreign Wars: VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point announces the “Voice of Democracy” scholarship competition. More than 50,000 high school students compete annually for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.” VFW Post 10221 will award a first, second and third place winner for local entries. Deadline is Friday. Call Jennifer, 399-7572. 

4H summer exchange program: Alaska youths ages 13-18 may apply for the 4H summer exchange program to Japan which will be July 11-Aug. 9. Participants are hosted by a Japanese youth of the same gender and similar age and share in their daily activities. Participants do not need to speak Japanese. Outbound exchange coordinator Jill Holmgren said they just need a curiosity about other cultures and an interest and willingness to try new things and make new friends.
