Contests, Scholarships

Veterans of Foreign Wars: Students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in the “Patriot’s Pen” essay contest. Top national winners receive at least $500; the first place award is $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. This year’s theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.” VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point will award a first, second and third place winner for local entries. Deadline is Nov. 15. Veterans of Foreign Wars: VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point announces the “Voice of Democracy” scholarship competition. High school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on a patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.” VFW Post 10221 will award a first, second and third place winner for local entries. Deadline is Nov. 15.
