Snagging allowed at Nick Dudiak Lagoon July 3-6

The move is described as “liberalizing” existing sport fishing regulations.

Snagging will be allowed at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon and adjacent waters, excluding the Homer Harbor, starting at noon on Thursday, July 3, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced Monday.

In a move described as “liberalizing” existing sport fishing regulations, ADF&G specified the areas to be opened for snagging as including the lagoon and the waters from the Homer city dock near the entrance to the Homer Boat Harbor, northwest along the east side of the Homer Spit to an ADF&G marker located approximately 200 yards northwest of the lagoon entrance, and 300 feet from the shore.

“This will give anglers a greater chance of harvesting the buildup of king salmon that are currently in the lagoon,” ADF&G area biologist Mike Booz said in the release.

The Homer Boat Harbor and the Homer Barge Basin, located approximately a half-mile northwest of the lagoon, remain closed by regulation to all sport fishing.

All other regulations remain in effect, including the bag and possession limits of two king salmon of any size. ADF&G also reminds anglers that king salmon 20 inches or longer harvested in the lagoon are included in the Cook Inlet annual limit of five king salmon. Anglers must record the harvest of king salmon 20 inches or longer on their sport fishing license, mobile app or on an annual harvest record card.
