Troopers involved in fatal shooting in Nikolaevsk; one trooper injured in incident and another person killed

Alaska State Troopers have identifed the person killed in a trooper involved shooting in Nikolaevsk on Saturday as Nikolai Yakunin, 42. Next of kin have been identified.

Alaska State Troopers on Saturday night, March 24, were involved in the fatal shooting about 7:40 p.m. in Nikolaevsk. According to a trooper press release, a trooper suffered serious injuries in the incident and was taken by medics to South Peninsula Hospital. Yakunin was confirmed dead at the scene. E Detachment troopers, Homer Police officers, and investigators with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to assist with the situation. The trooper or troopers involved who fired their service weapons will be placed on mandatory 72-hour adminsistrative leave. The trooper or troopers involved have not been identified. An investigation is ongoing.

According to a press release on Sunday, March 25, Alaska State Troopers at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday, March 24, received a report that Nikolain Yakunin, 42, of Nikolaevsk, was in contact with a woman in violation of his conditions of felony probation. Yakunin also had a condtion of release from a recent court case that he not contact the woman. A trooper responded to a Nikolaevsk Road home at about 7:05 p.m.

Troopers said Yakunin attacked the first responding trooper, injuring and incapacitating the trooper so that he could not defend himself. Another trooper arrived, and Yakunin continued his assualtive behavior, Troopers said. A trooper shot Yakunin “to prevent further assaults on any trooper or bystander,” the press release said. Yakunin was pronounced dead on the scene.
