An Eagle River woman must pay restitution after damaging the McNeil Canyon Elementary School soccer field and nabbing two Smokey the Bear signs from the Kachemak Emergency Services station.

Angela M. Glaves, 41, was arrested on May 25 after two separate reports were made to the Alaska State Troopers on May 22— one of damage to the soccer field made by someone “spinning doughnuts,” and another of a woman throwing a piece of cement at the KES station near the school before making off with two Smokey the Bear signs, according to an affidavit signed by Sgt. Daniel Cox.

The signs were valued at less than $250, and the damage caused to the soccer field was estimated at $1,000 to $1,500, according to the affidavit.

Glaves was contacted and arrested at the Windjammer Suites after a member of KES saw some children with one of the stolen signs, and they told him they found it at the hotel. Sgt. Ryan Browning of the Homer Police went to the hotel and spoke with Glaves, who first denied that the pickup carrying the second Smokey the Bear sign was hers, then apologized for taking it. The KES member took the sign from the scene.

When Cox asked Glaves why she took the sign, she said wasn’t going to give it to her kid “for the funniest, happiest present that he’d never thought Mom would get him from Homer,” according to the affidavit.

A charge of fourth-degree theft against Glaves was dismissed in court, and she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief, according to online court records. She was given 30 days of jail time, ordered to pay restitution and apply for an Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend, and get a mental health assessment and file quartelry reports with the court, according to the judgment. Glaves also was put on probation for a year.
