Suzanne Folwell McIntosh

Feb. 21, 1939 – Oct. 26, 2022

Suzanne Folwell McIntosh, Suzi to all who knew her, passed away in comfort and with dignity at Hospice House, Vero Beach, Florida on a sunny Oct. 26, 2022, morning at the age of 83 after a brief illness.

Suzi was born in Denver, Colorado, on Feb. 21, 1939, to parents Roger G. Folwell of Buffalo, New York, and Maxine Bashline (Folwell) of Akron, Ohio. Her family moved to New York City during the early part of World War II, finally settling in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1950, where Suzi attended Pine Crest School and Rosarian Academy in Palm Beach. Suzi graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School in 1957.

She went on to complete her freshman year at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. After a brief marriage and the birth of her sons, Roger and Peter, Suzi married Gregory S. McIntosh Jr., of Ft Lauderdale, Florida in December of 1962. The couple spent the first years of their marriage in Spain where their first child, Gregory S. McIntosh, III was born. They returned to Ft. Lauderdale in early 1964 where Catherine Dwyer McIntosh was born in 1965 and a second daughter, Mary McIntosh, came into the world for a few hours in 1966.

Suzi was not a member of any particular church; nevertheless, she maintained a very personal relationship with God. He permeated every aspect of her being, guiding her right up to the very moment He embraced her and took her with Him. In the early 1970s Suzi joined a fellowship dedicated to a daily commitment to sobriety. She remained in that fellowship, mentoring family and countless others until her death.

Suzi was happiest caring for her family, her friends, her cats and her dogs. She loved and led her family by example, loving each with special understanding and care. Her grandchildren remember her elegance, her grace, her smile, her infectious laugh, her ability to listen and as the last person to let go in a hug. Her friends remember her kindness and her ability to light up a room with her smile and her laughter.

In 1984 Suzi and Greg purchased property in Halibut Cove, Alaska, where the family spent summers and eventually moved year-round. It was there that she rekindled her love of drawing and painting using the landscape, wildlife, flowers, boats and people as subjects. She never tired of exploring tide pools, looking for an octopus, digging for clams or collecting mussels with her grandchildren. It was in Alaska where Suzi was most alive.

Suzi is survived by her husband, Greg; her son, Peter, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Winkler; her son Greg, III and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Coon McIntosh; her daughter, Dwyer McIntosh Derrig, and son-in-law, Michael S. Derrig; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roger Folwell; her mother Maxine Folwell; her brother, Roger Folwell Jr.; her daughter, Mary McIntosh, and her son Roger B. McIntosh.

A Celebration of Life will be held early 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to VNA Hospice House of Vero Beach, Florida (vnatc.org) or The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, Florida (hsvb.org). Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 916 17th Street, Vero Beach, Florida 32960.
