Peg Perkins

Jan. 3, 1924 – March 10, 2017

Peg Perkins, 93, died March 10, 2017. “A much loved mother, Peg Perkins, has joined her husband of 62 years and her dearly loved family members in heaven,” her family said.

Peg was a devoted mother of seven, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 14. Peggy loved life, her family and her faith equally. Ask any one of her children and they will reply, “Mom made me feel like I was an only child.” Along with her husband Glen they raised a brood of kids and showed them the world through sports, outdoors, faith and love. When the kids were gone, the couple spent their time in social ministry, helping the homeless and those struggling to meet the basic needs of life.

Family brought Peg to Homer in 2011, and in 2015 the caring staff at South Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care became her extended family, aides often sharing her daily antics with her family. Her Irish wit and quick comebacks became the norm and kept the staff on their toes. She took up singing random notes and tunes for all to enjoy, and as she traveled down the hallways, her voice would often precede her arrival.

Peg’s Alaska family in Homer includes Kim Perkins and Todd Hoppe, Jessica and Loretta Marx, Matt Springer and family; and in Kenai, Robyn Zinser and family. In the lower 48, Jim Perkins and family, Jayne Perkins and family of Virginia, Michael Perkins and family of North Carolina, and Cathy Ross and family of California.

Family will gather this summer in Virginia Beach, Va., for Peg’s mass at Star of the Sea parish where she volunteered so much of her time and for her celebration of a life well lived.
