Candidate statement: Gary Lee Stevens for Senate District C

It has been my privilege to represent this Senate district. We have been through a lot what with Covid, restrictions on meetings and travel, and our economy. As your Senator I have concentrated on funding community wide projects as well as legislation affecting fisheries and education, and meeting with concerned citizens.

I secured funding for the first step in Homer’s Large Vessel Harbor Expansion in the Capitol Budget originating in the Senate. I stopped attempts to remove it through working closely with the Co-Chairs of Finance and House Leadership. If I had not been in a key position, it is likely this funding would have been eliminated. You deserve a strong and well positioned advocate to insure the harbor expansion continues to be funded. I have supported many projects benefiting Homer such as the Cruise Ship Dock, Ferry Terminal, Pratt Museum, Hockey Association, Chamber parking lot and East End Road. One I am especially proud of was getting the initial as well as the final monies needed for the new Library.

Eight of my bills passed the legislature this year alone, more than any other Legislator. They include: SB33, a value-added bill increasing the value of Alaska seafood benefiting processors and fishermen; SB20 Out of State Teachers, helping to solve our teacher shortages; SB34 State-Tribal Education Compact Schools beginning the process for tribal entities to develop schools honoring native culture, traditions, and languages. I voted for the largest PFD appropriated and in fact voted for a $600 PFD increase because we had the funds even though that unfortunately did not pass this session. This year we must solve funding of the PFD.

I have always been in the majority caucus benefiting my district enormously. The minority has limited influence or meaningful control in the legislative process. Much more can be accomplished for our communities in the Senate Majority.

As the Senior Republican in the legislature, I have the experience and seniority to insure the Senate accomplishes important goals. I have been in Leadership for ten years as President (twice), Majority Leader, Rules Chair (twice), as well as Chair of Legislative Council (twice). Leadership counts. Seniority matters. I will do my best to bring the Senate together to solve the enormous problems facing Alaska.

In the end, what have I done for you? I have listened and responded to your needs, insured your projects are included in the capitol and operating budget, and sponsored legislation in education and fisheries that will affect not only our district but all of Alaska well into the future.

You deserve strong, experienced, and principled leadership. I ask you to STICK WITH STEVENS. Thank you for the honor of representing you.
