Hockey roundup: West wins End of Road tourney

End of the Road Tournament

The West hockey team won the End of the Road Tournament at Kevin Bell Arena in Homer on Saturday with a 2-1 overtime victory against Wasilla.

Both the Warriors and Eagles came into the four-team event with 2-0 records.

Aiden Fitzgerald scored on the power play in overtime to lift West. Wasilla had taken the lead in the first period on a power-play goal from Branson Starheim. West tied the game in the second period on a short-handed goal from Ian Keim.

Chase Broady made 24 saves for West, while Jakob Barcelona stopped 32 for the Warriors.

Also Saturday, Kenai Central defeated Homer 7-1 for third place. The Kardinals stopped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-5 overall, while Homer dropped to 3-6.

Landen Cialek and Logan Mese scored to put the Kardinals ahead 2-0 after the first period. In the second period, Mese scored again as Kenai took a 3-0 lead to the third period.

Just 20 seconds into the third period, Jacob Begich scored unassisted and short-handed to bump the lead to 4-0.

Kazden Stineff scored for the Mariners with 9:53 remaining, but less than a minute later, Toby Petty scored for Kenai to put the lead at 5-1.

Daniel Shelden and Begich, again unassisted and short-handed, finished the scoring for the Kardinals.

Carson Koppes made 27 saves for the Kardinals. Keegan Strong played the first two periods for Homer and stopped 17 of 20 shots, while Blaise Banks stopped 18 of 22 in the final period.

All-tournament honors went to Evan Fitzgerald of West, Ian Keim of West, Jakob Barcelona of Wasilla, Sayer Sanders of Wasilla, Jacob Begich of Kenai and Toby Nevak of Homer.

Wasilla 1, Kenai Central 0

Jakob Barcelona made 16 saves for the shutout as the Division I Warriors notched a Friday win over the Division II Kards at the End of the Road Tournament.

The Warriors were not able to solve Carson Koppes until Sayer Sanders scored with 1:42 left in the game. Koppes made 25 saves.

West 6, Homer 3

Friday, the Division II Mariners stuck with Division I Eagles through two periods despite getting badly outshot at the End of the Road Tournament.

Keegan Strong saved all six shots he saw for Homer, while Blaise Banks saved 63 of 68. Jasper Carpenter stopped 14 for West.

Homer took the lead in the first period on a goal from Casey Otis. West tied it before the end of the first on a strike from Martin Turney.

The Mariners again took the lead 55 seconds into the second period on a goal by Micah Williamson, but Samuel Drews tied it for West just 16 seconds later. Homer would take a 3-2 lead to the third due to a second goal by Otis.

The Eagles dominated the third period, with Ian Keim, Turney, Aaron James and Aiden Fitzgerald scoring.
