Homer Cycling Club hosts ‘Homer Epic’ fundraiser race

The ski category was cancelled due to “unfavorable conditions.”

Homer Cycling Club held its annual Homer Epic fundraiser and race Saturday, March 8.

The Homer Epic is a 50- or 100-kilometer human-powered winter race in the Caribou Hills, starting and ending at McNeil Canyon Elementary School. Capped at 150 participants, the race had 98 this year.

Normally open to skiers, runners and cyclists, the ski category was canceled this year due to less than favorable conditions on the route.

Chuck Lindsey, volunteer race director, said in an email Monday that while many participants were locals from the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage, athletes were registered from throughout the state as well as from places as far away as Chicago and New Zealand.

Lindsey said the final participant, a runner, finished the 100-kilometer race at 11:59 p.m., Saturday night as “the aurora flashed across the sky.”
